About
This workshop bridges the gaps and lays a strong foundation covering GFRP design codes, structural concepts, and geotechnical considerations.
Traditional reinforced concrete walls are designed with regular steel reinforcement, which is relatively inexpensive if you are not responsible for the long-term maintenance of the bulkhead or pile foundations. In marine environments owners are increasingly requiring improved long-term performance. Whereas regular steel is less expensive it offers less corrosion resistance and reduced design life in more demanding environments. Transportation Departments and owners are increasingly favoring Glass Fiber Reinforcement Plastic (GFRP) due to it's improved design life and resistance to corrosion. On the other hand, most engineers are not familiar with designing GFRP bulkheads or pile foundations as it is rarely taught as a subject in undergraduate university courses.

OUR EXPERIENCED INSTRUCTORS
WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR: PROF. ANTONIO NANNI
Antonio Nanni is the Inaugural Senior Scholar, Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Miami. His research interests are in construction materials, their structural performance and their field application. He is a site-director of the NSF I/U CRC Center for the Integration of Composites into Infrastructure. His research in materials and structures has impacted the work of technical committees in the US and abroad including professional and standards-writing agencies such as AASHTO, ACI, ASCE, ASTM and ICC-ES. Dr. Nanni has published extensively in refereed journals, conference proceedings, and co-authored two books. He is a registered PE in Italy, FL, PA, MO, and OK.
WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR: DR KHODAMORAD NABAKI
Khodamorad Nabaki is a Chartered, National and APEC registered Professional Engineer in Australia. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Structural Engineering from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and has over 15 years of experience working as a Structural Engineer involved in a variety of residential, commercial, and industrial projects. He is currently working as a Principal Structural Engineer at Madewell Products which specializes in GFRP (glass fiber reinforced polymer) and MST-BAR is the brand. Through Ph.D. study at the Centre for Innovative Structures and Materials at RMIT University, he has proposed two new innovative methods for fatigue and stress constrained structural optimization which has been published in the Journals of Structural Engineering (ASCE) and Material and Design (JMAD) in 2019. Dr. Nabaki is a member of the Australian Research Council (ARC) Training Centre for Transformation of Building and Infrastructure Systems through Innovations in Smart Prefabrication Technologies which aims to train the next generation of professionals and researchers, develop materials, systems, designs and theorize, value chains that will transform the construction industry in building and infrastructure in offsite manufacturing.
WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR: STEVE NOLAN
Steve Nolan is a registered Professional Engineer in Florida since 2001. He studied engineering at the University of New South Wales, with 4-years construction engineering experience in Australia before moving to the USA in 1996. His 24-years’ experience with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is primarily in highway bridge and structures design. He currently leads the implementation of Structural Advanced Materials for bridge applications within the FDOT State Structures Design Office. Mr Nolan is an active member of several international technical institutions (fib, BEI, ACI), TRB’s AKB10 Innovative Highway Structures and Appurtenances, and has presented and/or co-authored numerous papers on bridge design, prestressed concrete, and structural composites throughout his professional career.
WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR: DIMITRIOS C.KONSTANTAKOS
Dimitrios C. Konstantakos, P.E., is the founder and CEO of Deep Excavation LLC, a developer of user-friendly, high-quality, deep excavation calculation and design software. He is also the current chair of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Earth Retaining Structures Committee.
