Advances & Innovations in Shaft Excavations for Underground Construction

With increased tunneling and other trenchless construction applications for utility projects, there is a corresponding increase in the need for launch and receiving shafts for these projects. Such shafts can range from relatively shallow launch and receiving pits for utility crossings of highways, to shafts sometimes several hundred feet deep for such projects as water conveyance tunnels or combined sewer overflow (CSO) storage tunnels. In addition, while the portals of highway and rail tunnels are commonly at grade, these projects sometimes require intermediate shafts for ventilation or access. Mining projects are sometimes sources of innovation with shaft construction technologies that can be transferred to civil construction.
The wide range of tunneling methods, depths and dimensions, and geology encountered for shafts for underground construction projects results in extensive and often inventive or innovative shaft excavation and support systems. In this session, we propose to highlight recent advances and innovations in shaft excavations for underground construction projects. Papers will be solicited from designers, specialty contractors, equipment manufacturers, and academic researchers, focusing on advances in modeling and analytic approaches as well as new or novel construction methods and applications.
The session organizers are in the process of soliciting expressions of interest for abstracts/papers. The following are some specific areas of interest:
Raise-bore shaft construction
Large diameter “blind drilled” shaft excavations
Jet-grout shaft support systems
Ground freezing for shaft and portal excavation support
Ground movement analyses and monitoring adjacent to shafts
